Beyond Band-Aids: Comprehensive Wound Management Program

This hybrid course is composed of two components: an online, self-paced course offered through Canvas; this is followed by a two-day, in-person practicum at the Clinical Simulation Center of Las Vegas. The Canvas course opens first and you will be given several weeks to complete it prior to the in-person practicum. The two-day, in-person practicum will be on a future date. 


In addition to attending the in-person practicum, students are required to have a computer with internet access to complete the Canvas component of this course. Dressings and wound management technologies will be provided to each student during the course for orientation & demonstration, practice and skills validation.

This course is a comprehensive education program designed for beginner to advanced practice clinical professionals. The program content has been aligned with currently offered certifications in wound management.

The course is a self-paced, hybrid, program. The program includes a wide array of skin and wound topic modules based in the current standards of care and best practices that are delivered in an on-line format. The course culminates with a 2.5-day clinical intensive program with simulated case-based scenarios and a competency validation session.


Upon completion of the program, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify and discuss the critical, clinical parameters to assess when providing comprehensive wound management services.
  • Examine and perform patient assessments, and develop patient-centered plans of care to accomplish, and address wound management needs.
  • List and describe the classification and indications of various wound treatments, modalities, and products by incorporating them into the plan of care for patient cases.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, plan and create comprehensive wound management plans and patient education/discharge to advance healing and wound closure for specific cases and wound etiologies.
  • Identify and describe appropriate topical, supportive and adjuvant treatments and technologic interventions by category, classification, and benefit as they relate to the practice of wound management.
  • Analyze and discuss case-based quality improvement programming to sustain wound management and the meeting of specific programmatic outcomes.


Kathleen Thimsen, DNP, MSN, ET/WOCN, FNS

Dr. Kathleen Thimsen earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Webster University. She received a post-Masters degree from Johns Hopkins University in 2010 and graduated with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Regis University in 2015. Most recently, she served as Assistant Professor at Barnes Jewish College at the Goldfarb School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri. She has delivered many presentations and has multiple publications along with a record of external funding primarily in areas related to education, forensic nursing, wound care, and community health. Among her most recent honors include the Dean's Award for Service from the Goldfarb School of Nursing. Dr. Thimsen's involvement in national nursing boards is extensive, notably co-founding and serving as a charter member of both the Academy of Forensic Nursing and Forensic Nursing Certification Board. She has worked with the Academy of Forensic Nursing to create simulation scenarios and competency checklists as performance indicators. She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and the American Nurses Association. Dr. Thimsen's involvement in national nursing boards is extensive, notably co-founding and serving as a charter member of both the Academy of Forensic Nursing and Forensic Nursing Certification Board.
