Beginning Doula Course

This Birth Doula Certificate course package consists of a Canvas course as well as a 2-day in-person practicum on a future date in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Canvas course opens first and you will have several weeks to finish the course. Upon completion of the course and practicum, you will be awarded 24 contact hours of Continuing Education. UNLV School of Nursing, Continuing Education is an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the Nevada Board of Nursing.

A birth and postpartum doula certification centered on inclusive and culturally affirming practices. This course is rooted in advocacy, support, trauma-informed practices, and building your community. Participants will be challenged to explore their own understandings of pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period while simultaneously gaining a holistic perspective of best practices. Participants will learn about reproductive & birth justice, body anatomy, the stages of labor, comfort measures, chest\breastfeeding, postpartum period, and much more. Teaching materials will include culturally and gender-affirming voices.


Cristina Hernandez, MPH, C-FSD (BADT), C-CBE (DTI)


Cristina Hernandez (ella/she/her) graduated from UNLV with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2005, graduate certificate in Women's Studies in 2012, and in 2020 received her Master’s degree in Public Health. Her professional paper topic was on lesbian and trans men’s pregnancy, birth experience, and birth outcomes based on provider (i.e. OB/GYN, Midwife, and Nurse Practitioner) and setting (i.e. hospital, home, and birth center). She has been a doula since 2017, a certified childbirth educator since 2018, and certified as a full spectrum doula via Birthing Advocacy Doula Trainings (BADT).  She is the owner of Vida Full Spectrum Birth Services and a Project Manager for EARN-FS (Early Responsive Nurturing Care for Food Security) at the UNLV School of Public Health in the Department of Social and Behavioral Health. This project is researching maternal and child health & nutrition within the West Las Vegas Promise Neighborhood.


She believes birth is transformative and ceremonial. Informed consent, body autonomy, trauma-informed, and centering clients are essential values within her work.  She is most passionate about serving QTBIPOC and victims/survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence.

Continuing Education

Nursing CEU: Contact Hours - 24.

CE is offered by the School of Nursing, University of Nevada Las Vegas. The UNLV School of Nursing is an accredited provider of continuing Nursing Education by the Nevada State Board of Nursing.


The in-person, two-day practicum will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada.


Day 1 will take place at Clinical Simulation Center of Las Vegas. Day 2 will take place at Heart and Sol collective. 7381 Prairie Falcon RD. STE 120 Las Vegas, NV 89128.
